Donald Cooke Ltd origins date back to the 1920’s. William John Cooke was a carrier (modern day haulage), who opened a hay and corn merchant in Woodhouse, Sheffield on the Market Street.The telephone number was number 27.The company has carried on though four generations from William John Cooke, Cyril Dawson Cooke, Colin & Donald Cooke, though to the present day with William Dawson Cooke (Bill Cooke).
Although the business began in Woodhouse the corn merchants moved to Masbourgh Mill on Brinsworth Street, Rotherham in the 1960’s.The company then expanded into the breadcrumb market producing around 20-30 tonnes a week. This was produced along with pigeon corns, birdseeds and all types of animal feeds.
In 1972 Masbourgh mill was demolished in order to make way for Main Street roundabout.The business moved to its present day location at 1-5 Greasbrough Road in Rotherham.Around this time Lookydog was developed this was one of the first complete dog foods, this was a predecessor to the many complete foods now advertised on TV, Lookydog has seen improvements over the years and still remains a very popular brand today.
In the mid 1980’s EMP our flagship product was developed and quickly became one of the best selling bird rearing foods in the UK. It is currently the market leader and most widely know bird rearing foods in the UK according to the Cage and Aviary bird magazine.In 1990 Bill Cooke became the proprietor and the company went limited in 2004 becoming Donald Cooke Ltd.
