Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions is this food designed for?
Arden Grange VetCare Gastrointestinal is designed to support three specific conditions: intestinal absorptive disorders, inadequate digestion (maldigestion), and chronic pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). It is a complete dietary feed intended to complement — not replace — veterinary treatment. Always consult your vet before starting or extending use of this diet.
How long should my dog be fed this diet?
The recommended feeding period depends on the condition being managed. For intestinal absorption disorders, up to 12 weeks is recommended. To compensate for inadequate digestion, 3–12 weeks. For chronic pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), this diet may be fed for life. Your vet will advise on the appropriate duration for your dog's specific condition.
Is this food grain free?
Yes — the recipe is completely grain free with no cereals included. The carbohydrate sources are sweet potato and pumpkin, both of which are highly digestible and gentle on a compromised digestive system. This makes it suitable for dogs with grain sensitivities alongside their gastrointestinal condition.
Why is duck used as the protein source?
Duck is a novel protein for many dogs — meaning they are less likely to have developed a sensitivity or intolerance to it compared to more common proteins like chicken or beef. It is also highly digestible and palatable, making it an ideal choice for dogs with gastrointestinal issues who may have reduced appetite or digestive capacity. The inclusion of 26% fresh duck alongside duck meal provides both palatability and concentrated nutrition.
Why is the fat content low?
Fat is harder for the body to digest than protein or carbohydrates, and places additional demand on the pancreas. For dogs with pancreatic insufficiency or gastrointestinal disorders, a low-fat diet (10% crude fat in this recipe) reduces the digestive load and helps the gut and pancreas recover more effectively. Fish oil provides essential omega-3 fatty acids without significantly increasing the overall fat burden.
What are electrolytes and why are they increased in this food?
Electrolytes are minerals that regulate fluid balance and support normal cell function. Dogs with intestinal absorptive disorders often lose electrolytes through diarrhoea and impaired absorption. This recipe includes increased levels of sodium bicarbonate, potassium chloride, and sodium chloride to help replenish and maintain electrolyte balance, supporting recovery and normal bodily function.
Is there a wet food version of this diet?
Yes — the Arden Grange VetCare Gastrointestinal wet dog food is available in a 395g tin and provides the same targeted digestive support in a wet format. Some owners use both wet and dry together to add variety while maintaining the therapeutic diet.
Is this food suitable for puppies?
No — this diet is not suitable for puppies, pregnant bitches, or lactating bitches. It is formulated specifically for adult dogs under veterinary supervision. If your puppy has gastrointestinal issues, speak to your vet about an appropriate dietary solution for their life stage.
